What is Roku?

Roku is a media streaming device that allows users to stream movies, music, and TV series directly on their TV screens. It connects to the internet via WiFi or Ethernet cable and streams videos in full HD quality, which requires a strong internet connection. The latest version, Roku 4, supports 4K streaming, making it ideal for users with 4K TVs.

Setting Up Roku

All Roku players connect to your TV through an HDMI port. The Roku Express+ offers the added option of connecting via a composite cable, making it compatible with older TVs.

Types of Roku Devices

There are two main types of Roku devices, both of which require your TV to have at least one HDMI port:

  • Roku Player: A set-top box that comes with various cables.
  • Roku Stick: A device resembling a flash drive, which comes with at least one power cable.

Connecting Roku to Your TV

  • Roku Player: Connect one end of the HDMI cable to the Roku Player and the other end to your TV’s HDMI port (usually located on the back or side of the TV).
  • Roku Stick: Insert the HDMI connector on the Roku Stick into your TV’s HDMI port.

If your TV has multiple HDMI ports, note which port you use to easily switch to the correct input later.

Powering the Roku

Both the Roku Player and Roku Stick need to be connected to a power source:

  • Roku Player: Plug the power cable into the player and connect it to an electrical outlet.
  • Streaming Stick (model 3800 and below): Connect the power cable to the stick and then to an outlet.
  • Streaming Stick+ (model 3810): Similarly, connect the power cable to the stick and plug it into an outlet.

You can also use your TV’s USB port as a power source if it has one.

Connecting to the Internet

To connect Roku to your WiFi network:

  1. Scan for networks by selecting “Scan again to see all networks” and press “OK.”
  2. Find your network’s SSID and select it.
  3. Enter your network password using the on-screen keyboard.
  4. Press “OK” to confirm.

Once connected, allow Roku to download the latest software updates.

Display Settings

  • For Roku Players, the device will automatically detect and apply the correct display settings for your HDTV.
  • With the Roku Streaming Stick, select “Set display type” and let the setup run.
  • For the Streaming Stick+, choose “Auto” to automatically detect the display type.

You can adjust the display settings later by going into the “Settings” menu.

Activating Your Roku

To activate your Roku device, you’ll need a five-character activation code displayed on-screen:

  1. Visit https://my.roku.com/link on your browser.
  2. Enter the five-character code and click “Submit.”
  3. Provide your email address, password, and any other required details to complete the activation.
